Yesterday and into today, Ubersmith’s home city has been enveloped in about a half an inch of ice.
While we currently have power, phone and internet connectivity at the office, it is possible that may change over the course of the day today. With limbs falling off trees and power lines failing, power outages are likely to increase throughout the day.
If we do lose power at the office, you may not be able to reach us via telephone. We would suggest that you email support with any queries should that be the case. We will do our best to respond to all requests are quickly as possible.

If you’re new to Ubersmith, and are installing it for the first time, you may find our updated installation documentation to be helpful. These updated articles specifically focus on the Debian and CentOS Linux distributions.
This is all part of our efforts to update and improve Ubersmith documentation as a whole.
With the release of Ubersmith DE 1.6 last month, we’ve been hard at work walking customers through the upgrade. It’s gone very well, and the majority of DE customers are now running the latest and greatest from the Ubersmith team. We’re pleased as punch. The release included a lot of new features and improvements that solidify Ubersmith DE as the leading choice for medium and large hosting providers.
Of course, we haven’t forgotten about our valued Ubersmith customers, and have been working diligently on the next release all this time. It’s therefore with great pleasure that we announce the immediate release and availability of Ubersmith 5.6.1.
Now, all Ubersmith products are PHP 5.x compliant. Many of our smaller customers who were running Ubersmith on a shared environment have been asking for this for a long time. Well, it may be a bit late but we’ve finally delivered on that, along with a plethora of other enhancements for Ubersmith.
We’re already starting to plan the next versions of both Ubersmith DE and Ubersmith, as well as scheming about how exactly we’re going to revolutionize the market with some dramatic product and pricing changes that we’ll be making soon.
Please note: The new release of Ubersmith requires two new PHP modules, namely ‘gettext’ and ‘mbstring’. These are readily available in most Linux distributions, so be sure to install them before you begin the upgrade process. Also, be sure to perform a backup of your database before upgrading!

Ubersmith has been working hard away on the next version of DE that was announced in February. We know you guys have been waiting patiently, so here’s an update from the trenches! The good news is that 1.6 is now feature complete, and we’ve been building release candidates for testing.
We’ve also decided to sneak in some additional features to more fully round out this latest version. In addition to the features announced previously, we are pleased to be able to announce the following enhancements to the Device Manager.
1) Improved Server Metrics
Now, summary information is presented along with the device view, and additional metrics such as Disk I/O activity is tracked and graphed.
2) Monitor alarm snoozing.
Doing maintenance on a customers infrastructure? A particular server? Want to put it into ‘maintenance mode’ for a few hours to that alarms don’t go off while service is interrupted? Go ahead and snooze the monitor during your maintenance activities.
3) Syslog integration
Many of our DE customers utilize syslog extensively. The 1.6 version of Ubersmith comes with a basic syslog module that will allow you to integrate Ubersmith with an external syslog server (such as php-syslog-ng).
4) General SQL speedups
With each release, Ubersmith is being used by larger and larger organizations. We’ve made some improvements and optimizations that help Ubersmith run faster for people with thousands of devices.
The bad news is that with these additional features and final testing, we’re going to be pushing our public release date back by two weeks. While we realize that this is frustrating since we haven’t put out a new release in a while, we hope the wait will be worth it, and we’re confident that it’s the right decision. We want to make sure that the latest and greatest from Ubersmith will still be as stable and bug free as our customers have come to expect.
Ubersmith DE 1.6 will now be publicly available to new customers on June 16th.
We will be contacting existing Ubersmith DE customers to coordinate upgrades starting June 12 2008. Further, starting June 2nd, private previews will be available to existing DE clients who want to get a sneak peak of what’s coming down the pipeline.

At long last the newest stable version of Ubersmith Lite and Pro has been released. v5.3.0 stable can be downloaded now at http://downloads.ubersmith.com. To update your existing instance extract the new files over your current install and follow the instructions for the update process.

While this is a stable release, there may still be small bugs present. Please let us know any issues you run into by emailing support@ubersmith.com.
